Harmanpreet Kaur targets Asia Cup and Asian Games gold

India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to lead her team through a demanding September schedule as the squad targets back-to-back tournament victories. The Asia Cup campaign runs from August 28 to September 13 at Dubai International Stadium in the United Arab Emirates, followed immediately by the Asian Games from September 17 to 22 at Kōrogi Sports Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The four-day gap between the conclusion of one tournament and the start of another presents a compressed timeline for India’s pursuit of two major titles.

India will face Thailand on August 30, Hong Kong China on September 3 and Pakistan on September 5 during the group stage of the Asia Cup. The semi-finals are scheduled for September 10 and 11, with the final set for September 13. India are aiming to reclaim the Asia Cup trophy after Sri Lanka won the 2024 final.

“Asia Cup is a very important tournament for us. Our team has been dominating from a long time and we’ve won multiple titles in Asia Cup. When you play back-to-back good cricket, your fans and audiences expect even more,” said Harmanpreet to Sony Sports Network.

“The biggest challenge is when you have the ‘good team’ tag. Playing for those expectations is in itself a very big challenge. Only focus on cricket, focus on our aims, focus on our routines,” she added.

At the Asian Games, India will defend their gold medal status from the 2023 Hangzhou Games, where they emerged as champions in women’s cricket. Sri Lanka are defending their Asia Cup title after their 2024 victory, while Indonesia are making their Women’s Asia Cup debut in the tournament.

Kaur, who has played 200 T20 Internationals across her career, carries the responsibility of steering India through both tournaments within the compressed timeframe. The 37-year-old captain will be central to India’s bid to secure both trophies and maintain the team’s standing in international women’s cricket.

India’s Asia Cup campaign will test the squad’s depth and consistency across multiple matches in quick succession. The group stage fixtures against Thailand, Hong Kong China and Pakistan will determine India’s path through the knockout stages.

“As a cricketer I think this is a very big opportunity because before this we have mostly played ICC tournaments but have not fought for a medal. We are coming after the win at Lord’s and have also won many games on the trot so the team has already tasted success and will be hungry for more,” said Harmanpreet.
