Bangladesh Women advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games 2026 women’s cricket competition without playing a single ball after their quarter-final against China Women was abandoned due to a wet outfield at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, on Thursday.
The first quarter-final was scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM local time (5:30 AM IST), but persistent rain around the venue left the playing surface unfit for cricket. The umpires inspected the ground three times after the rain stopped, but conditions did not improve enough for play to begin. The match was eventually abandoned without the toss or a single delivery being bowled.
Under the tournament’s playing regulations, Bangladesh progressed to the last four because of their superior international ranking. Bangladesh are ranked 10th in the world, while China are ranked 36th.
Asian Games 2026: Bangladesh Women Advance, China Eliminated
The washout brings a frustrating end to China’s Asian Games campaign who had qualified for the women’s cricket competition after finishing third in the Asian Games qualifier in Malaysia, while Bangladesh received a direct place in the quarter-finals as one of the established Asian cricket nations.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, continue their bid for an Asian Games medal. The team has previously won two silver medals and one bronze in the women’s cricket event at the Asian Games, with their most recent medal coming at the 2022 Hangzhou Games.
The Bangladesh side are led by Nigar Sultana Joty, with players including Nahida Akter, Ritu Moni, Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter and Marufa Akter in the squad.
Bangladesh are now through to the semi-finals scheduled for September 20. They could face defending champions India, depending on the outcome of India’s quarter-final against hosts Japan.
