Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud etched his name in the record books on Sunday, October 11, by becoming the first pacer from the country to claim a hat-trick in Test cricket.
The 26-year-old achieved the milestone on Day 3 of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, dismissing three batters in three consecutive deliveries during Afghanistan’s first innings.
Mahmud’s remarkable spell helped Bangladesh tighten their grip on the contest after the hosts resumed the day looking to build on their overnight score.
Hasan Mahmud completes historic Test hat-trick
Mahmud produced his memorable spell in the 83rd over of Afghanistan’s innings. He first bowled Ismat Alam with a delivery that beat the batter’s defence and crashed into the stumps.
Qais Ahmad became Mahmud’s next victim, with wicketkeeper Litton Das completing a low catch behind the stumps off the following delivery.
The Bangladesh pacer then had the opportunity to complete his hat-trick against Zia-ur-Rehman. Mahmud struck the batter on the pads and appealed for an lbw decision, but the on-field umpire initially turned it down.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto opted for a review, and ball-tracking showed that the delivery would have hit the off stump. The decision was overturned, allowing Mahmud to complete a historic hat-trick and celebrate a landmark moment for Bangladesh cricket.
Hasan Mahmud becomes third Bangladesh bowler to take a Test hat-trick
Mahmud became only the third Bangladesh bowler to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. Former Bangladesh spinner Alok Kapali was the first to achieve the feat against Pakistan in Peshawar in 2003.
Sohag Gazi followed him with a hat-trick against New Zealand in Chittagong in 2013. Both previous hat-trick heroes were spinners, making Mahmud the first fast bowler from Bangladesh to accomplish the feat in the longest format.
His achievement marks a significant milestone for Bangladesh’s pace-bowling history and adds another memorable chapter to the country’s Test cricket journey.
Hasan Mahmud’s 5-wicket haul puts Bangladesh in control
Mahmud finished Afghanistan’s first innings with impressive figures of 5/55 in 21 overs, helping bowl the hosts out for 240. Bangladesh had earlier posted 346 in their first innings, giving them a lead of 106 runs.
Afghanistan resumed Day 3 at 211/4 and would have hoped to extend their total. However, Mahmud’s three-wicket burst in the 83rd over put the lower order under immense pressure.
Afghanistan could not recover from the collapse and were eventually dismissed for 240. Mahmud’s 5-wicket haul was therefore crucial in strengthening Bangladesh’s position in the one-off Test.
Hasan Mahmud continues to make an impact in Test cricket
Since making his Test debut in 2024, Mahmud has become part of Bangladesh’s pace-bowling attack in the longest format.
His historic hat-trick against Afghanistan represents a major individual achievement and highlights his growing importance to the team.
