Australia had entered the game on eight points and were virtually assured of qualification courtesy of their superior net run rate, while India and South Africa were level on six points. India needed only a win to progress regardless of the margin. After opting to bat, they posted 170 for 4, with Australia chasing down the target with an over to spare to complete an unbeaten group-stage campaign.
Group 2 had been decided on Saturday, with West Indies, who had kept their hopes alive despite a shock defeat to Ireland, secured a semi-final berth after England – who had already sealed a spot – beat defending champions New Zealand in the final group-stage match. West Indies progressed on the back of a superior net run rate.
England, like Australia, finished the group stage with a perfect record, winning all five of their matches to top Group 2.
